Starting your own e-commerce site is not for the faint of heart. I tried many different internet business models and chased too many "silver bullet" solutions before I recognized that there is no easy-button for e-commerce. I do hope that this book will be an easier button.
It's easy to get completely lost when you begin your e-commerce journey. What business model do I use? How do I find suppliers? How does dropshipping work? How do I take credit cards? How do I build my store? The questions are endless.
In this book I do my best to answer those questions. It's the guide I wish I had when I started out in the business. I'm not one of those flashy guys who poses in front of a Ferrari and talks about all the exotic locations he's visited in the last six months.
My wife and I operate e-commerce sites and we make real income from it. We're working our way toward grand vacations and a more extravagant and rewarding lifestyle, but we've got lots of kids and plenty of college tuition to pay for. So the trips to Bali will wait a little while.
That's no problem because we enjoy what we do. You will too if you stick with it. So stay focused and follow along with the book. When you hit a section that says "Take Action Now," do it. That's the real secret to success.

From The Beginning...

I was a bit skeptical about this book, since I've seen a lot of books like this in my years (17+) as a web developer online. But, I'm always looking for a good basic book that I can recommend to my clients who don't want long-term consulting or who can't afford it, so I decided to check it out.
It's a pretty good book. In fact, I've already recommended one of my clients (from my day job) purchase it, not for an eCommerce site, but for another site, just to learn a bit more of the promotions side of the internet, which Rob covers well.
This book covers everything from the beginning of creating an eCommerce site. While it's not exhaustive (it wouldn't be possible), it covers a lot of options - enough for the average shop builder. And honestly choosing one shop or site type over another is NOT a key to success. I have my preferences, but even I know that using the system I prefer to develop with versus another system for a simple shop will not make or break a client (it's all about the personal, IMO).
That's where Rob lost one star from me--the emphasis on choosing a niche.
Yes, I know niches are hot topics. That's OK. If you just want to make money online, and want to know how to choose a niche, then this book will help you (and he's pretty clear about each step). However, I have always enjoyed success by doing things I love, not things that other people love.
I think this book is missing that section. The section that speaks about passion for your topic, and how that can mean more than simply choosing a niche for traffic and sales. And the reason I know this works is because people do it every day.
That's the negative stuff, and it's a pretty small nitpick. *smiles*
If you are getting into eCommerce, and you'd like to learn more, buy this book. I will be recommending it to my clients, because it covers everything at a level even a beginner can understand, while also getting into sufficient detail for those who have gottena start, and want more.

Lots of useful information in this book for someone who is considering starting an online e-commerce site. I thought the section on how to find products and niche ideas was really useful. There are a lot of checklists and practical information that you can use to follow from start to finish. There's a really good section on how to hire an ecommerce developer (and how to know when you should) as well as lots of details on how and when to outsource tasks.
When it comes to internet marketing and online businesses there are a lot of e-books that are really just glorified pamphets. This is a "real" book that covers nearly every aspect of starting and running an online store. The only area that could have been covered in more detail is customer service and operation, but there was still some good info in that chapter.

Your comprehensive guide to e-commerce

This comprehensive and well-written, well organized book is a must-purchase for anyone getting into e-commerce and setting up a web-based store.
The author covers everything from setting up a legal entity, to niche research, determining profitability, dropshipping, sourcing products,setting up your online presence and much more.
I'd love to have a pdf or hard copy for easier reference.
